What to expect

“A spiritual energy or life force located at the base of the spine”

Kundalini yoga is a unique, stress-relieving practice, described as a sleeping, dormant potential force in the human organism. A component of the “subtle body”, the Kundalini practice is deemed to awaken the energy and consciousness, coiled in the root chakra at the base of your spine, and ascend to the 7th, enlightened crown chakra...

Chakra? Enlightened? .. what?

If you’re new to Kundalini, or yoga in general, no worries! In layman’s terms, Kundalini is a spiritual practice as much as it is physical, and it is a cherished option from beginners to advanced yogis alike. So, if this is your first time here, you’re in the right place! And, if you’re a returning, die-hard practitioner, welcome back.

Let’s start with the basics. In a typical Kundalini class, there are three parts:

  • An opening chant, or “tuning in”
  • A “kriya”, which is a sequence of postures paired with breathing techniques, and a brief warm-up for your spine
  • A closing meditation with the sound of gong or song

Different kriyas use different breaths, and the most popular breathing technique is “Breath of Fire”. With sealed lips, you take short, quick breathes, in and out of the nose, at the rate of about two to three breathes per second (yes, a bit like a dog panting…). As you breathe, air is expelled in powerful spurts, engaging your core, as well as reducing stress, boosting brain function and improving respiratory health.

Chanting and singing are major components of Kundalini, and while there are endless mantras and songs, most classes start with Adits Mantra, which means - “I bow to the subtle divine wisdom, the divine teacher within.” Another common chant is Sat Nam, which means - “I am truth.”

Kundalini classes are meditation-heavy. Each set has different poses that involve movement, breathing techniques, mindfulness and a mantra. Between postures, you have a minute or two to relax, reflect, focus inward, and after the entire set, relaxation is followed by meditation, and a closing mantra to take with you.

According to research, Kundalini yoga can impact cognitive function, boosting both concentration and memory, and the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention foundation even recommended a Kundalini kriya for improvement of memory retention. It is no surprise the practice’s seen a meteoric rise, and we’re here for it!

One last question… why do the Kundalini yogis where white? The color white is thought to ward off negative energy and extend your own aura. You do not have to wear head-to-toe white, but you’ll see it’s quite common! Teachers often wear a white head covering, such as a hat, scarf or turban to contain the energy in the body.

So… what do you think? Kundalini can be a bit odd at first, we know. But, we love it. Given a chance, we think you will, too.

Flow Yoga Westgate is wonderful! They have lots of different classes and tons of time frames to fit a busy schedule. Everything about the studio is top notch!

I'm so glad to have found a yoga studio close to my apartment!!! I like that in your first month, you can try out as many different classes as you want, so you can find out what kind of yoga and/or instructor(s) you like. I've been going to hot Vinyasa once a week, and it's been a great addition to my fitness routine. Would recommend! Also Enrique is awesome (: you should definitely take a class with him.

Skye W. May 21, 2025

Easily the best, most affordable, and most welcoming yoga studio I've ever been to! I just joined about a month ago on the new member plan, the fact that I've gone to dozens of classes already for only $30? ... insane! Honestly, I think the unlimited plan is so so worth it if you're looking to go more than once a week, too. I used to frequent another studio in austin and eventually stopped my membership because the cost was not sustainable for me and I never really.. clicked with the classes. Every class there either felt too challenging or too relaxing. But here, I don't feel that at all! Every single teacher has been so welcoming, always include plenty of options to modify poses and have very unique touches to their classes. Plus the actual space is gorgeous at the Westgate studio!! I've already renewed my membership for the next month and can easily see myself staying for a long time to come

I love flow yoga guys, classes are amazing and North loop location is super nice. Third eye is just perfect in any way. Teachers are professional and super patient. I am upgrading to unlimited classes after 2 months only.

The space is always clean and welcoming. A beautiful addition to the Georgetown community!!!

Michele A. May 15, 2025

I’m still just in my first weeks of Yoga at the Georgetown studio, but I’ve been impressed! I’ve been trying several different styles to see what fits my needs and love the options. As a beginner, my favorite has been slow flow, but I love Hatha Yoga and Yin + Sound as well. Before and after the classes it’s easy to speak with instructors about movement questions. I found that very helpful because I felt like the instructor made sure to casually mention accommodations that I needed during the class. The studio itself is very clean and relaxing. I can tell they are building a positive community. I’m glad to find a place to move and strengthen my body in the gentle way I need right now in conjunction with my other low impact exercises.

Jill N. May 14, 2025

Every class so far has been amazing. There is such a variety of class styles and times. All of the instructors are friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend!

Kimberly W. May 12, 2025

I started going to Flow Yoga on their 30 days for $30 pass which is such a good means of introducing their studio. I am more than likely going to sign on as a regular attendee as I’ve so enjoyed the classes. The space is beautiful and the instructors are welcoming and kind. I am a bodybuilder so dynamic movement isn’t as common for me in my day to day and have been using this as a means of getting back to my dancer roots, relieving aches and pains, and connecting with my body and it has been wonderful. Can’t recommend this studio enough. My favorite class so far is JJ’s flexibility + mobility. Check them out!

John L. May 13, 2025

Have been to several classes over the past 2 months and have greatly enjoyed this studio. Several different teachers with different styles and flows available. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend for beginners and/or seasoned yogi's. Will be back for more.

Yoga helps with memory like a mental filing cabinet, helping you store and retrieve information more effectively. It can help improve focus, concentration, and overall brain function. Plus, it's a lot more fun than trying to remember where you put your keys.

Yoga can help with depression like a ray of sunshine for your mind. It can help reduce stress and anxiety, improve self-esteem, and increase feelings of happiness and well-being. Plus, it's a lot more fun than sitting in a therapist's office all day.

Absolutely! Yoga is like a prenatal and postpartum superhero. It can help improve your strength, flexibility, and endurance during pregnancy, and can also help you recover faster after giving birth. Plus, it's a lot more fun than lying in bed all day.

Yoga helps with weight management like a personal trainer, only without the whistle and clipboard. It can help you build lean muscle mass, increase metabolism, and reduce stress, all of which can contribute to weight loss and maintenance. Plus, it's a lot more fun than counting calories.

Yoga can help with menopause symptoms like a soothing balm for your body. It can help reduce hot flashes, improve sleep, and reduce stress. Plus, it's a lot more fun than sitting in a freezer to cool off.
