What to expect

“A spiritual energy or life force located at the base of the spine”

Kundalini yoga is a unique, stress-relieving practice, described as a sleeping, dormant potential force in the human organism. A component of the “subtle body”, the Kundalini practice is deemed to awaken the energy and consciousness, coiled in the root chakra at the base of your spine, and ascend to the 7th, enlightened crown chakra...

Chakra? Enlightened? .. what?

If you’re new to Kundalini, or yoga in general, no worries! In layman’s terms, Kundalini is a spiritual practice as much as it is physical, and it is a cherished option from beginners to advanced yogis alike. So, if this is your first time here, you’re in the right place! And, if you’re a returning, die-hard practitioner, welcome back.

Let’s start with the basics. In a typical Kundalini class, there are three parts:

  • An opening chant, or “tuning in”
  • A “kriya”, which is a sequence of postures paired with breathing techniques, and a brief warm-up for your spine
  • A closing meditation with the sound of gong or song

Different kriyas use different breaths, and the most popular breathing technique is “Breath of Fire”. With sealed lips, you take short, quick breathes, in and out of the nose, at the rate of about two to three breathes per second (yes, a bit like a dog panting…). As you breathe, air is expelled in powerful spurts, engaging your core, as well as reducing stress, boosting brain function and improving respiratory health.

Chanting and singing are major components of Kundalini, and while there are endless mantras and songs, most classes start with Adits Mantra, which means - “I bow to the subtle divine wisdom, the divine teacher within.” Another common chant is Sat Nam, which means - “I am truth.”

Kundalini classes are meditation-heavy. Each set has different poses that involve movement, breathing techniques, mindfulness and a mantra. Between postures, you have a minute or two to relax, reflect, focus inward, and after the entire set, relaxation is followed by meditation, and a closing mantra to take with you.

According to research, Kundalini yoga can impact cognitive function, boosting both concentration and memory, and the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention foundation even recommended a Kundalini kriya for improvement of memory retention. It is no surprise the practice’s seen a meteoric rise, and we’re here for it!

One last question… why do the Kundalini yogis where white? The color white is thought to ward off negative energy and extend your own aura. You do not have to wear head-to-toe white, but you’ll see it’s quite common! Teachers often wear a white head covering, such as a hat, scarf or turban to contain the energy in the body.

So… what do you think? Kundalini can be a bit odd at first, we know. But, we love it. Given a chance, we think you will, too.

Started yoga January 2020 and did not get many classes in before the world stopped. Between that and years following by caretaking and retirement, I have been not connected to any community. Flow Yoga has a vibe that reminds me of grad school, with interesting students and widely divergent instructors. Every class reflects the teacher and with so many classes and teachers available it would difficult to call this school routine or dull. Plus an unexpected bonus is their active events reflecting holidays, retreats and mediations on special subjects. I waited to join until my mat from Liforme arrived, but I need not waited as there are mats available. I felt foolish being a beginner and getting a pro mat, but it’s added to my overall enjoyment. After my trial membership, I chose the unlimited membership as I show up two to three times a week and enjoy the time spent there. I can not say the same for gyms I have signed up for previously, but it’s very similar to being in a martial arts school with the positivity and encouragement in abundance for its students.

1. The service: the intentional greeting upon arrival is so warm, flattering, and starts the session out with positive energy! Dina has amazing energy, and makes everyone feel so welcome. She is very kind and patience. 2. The experience: I’ve never participated in group meditation classes until now, and this has exceeded my expectations. The guidance during these sessions is unparalleled. That is an element of the practice that is typically missing from self guided sessions, for me. The level of expertise provided, from the sounds, to the focus reminders, etc, provided make for an experience like no other. 3. The environment: you walk in and are met with a well maintained, clean, fresh, environment, with high quality work out equipment- The plants are healthy and thriving, the tea being served is hot and fresh. 4. The products: we purchased a quality Tarot Card Holder from this location, and it is fantastic, with a gorgeous design.

I am loving my new yoga home! Having practiced for many years in a number of different cities, Yoga Flow may be my all time favorite. It has a great vibe whether your class is in the sun room or the moon room. There is a wide variety of classes to meet everyone’s needs. But I think what I was most impressed with was just how clean it always is. The studios are always super clean and smell great as are the bathrooms. The teachers are also amazing with lots of knowledge to share! I love it!

I had an excellent experience with Flow Yoga for a private event yoga session that I had for me and my friends! Jenny did a great job communicating/coordinating with me for some last minute logistics. Katie was a great teacher, and brought a very calming energy that was much appreciated! I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my private class, and know I will be back for more classes at Flow!
