What to expect

Yin Yoga is a contemplative style of yoga that involves holding poses for an extended period, typically three to five minutes or more. It is a slower-paced, more meditative form of the physical and spiritual discipline of yoga. Unlike other types of yoga that focus on engaging the muscles, Yin Yoga aims to target the connective tissues through passive holds and little muscular effort.

Yin yoga is meant to help promote balance within your body by working the deep connective tissues. It is a branch of hatha yoga, an ancient Indian practice that focuses on stretching and strengthening the physical body to prepare for sitting meditation.

Yin Yoga is based on three fundamental principles known as Tattvas: Edge, Stillness, and Time that are to be expected in every class. The edge refers to how deeply you go into each pose, which varies for each individual and is determined by the natural limits of your body. Props, such as blocks or blankets, can be used to support the body and help you find your edge. Once you find your edge, the goal is to remain still, and breathe deep and consistently, in the pose for an extended period of time, allowing the deep connective tissues to release. The length of time spent in each pose is an essential aspect of Yin Yoga, as it provides ample time to fully release and obtain maximum benefits.

Yin is a slow, mindful practice that targets the connective tissues, such as ligaments, joints, and fascia. Working with the energetic systems of the body, Yin Yoga brings the body into balance, and improves its natural range of motion. Most poses are done while seated or lying down supported by the use of props, and are held in stillness for several minutes. As we move into stillness, we bring body, breath and soul into harmony. I move around and travel a lot so I’ve experienced lots of different types of yoga and studios - I have never loved a studio as much as I do Flow! The studio itself is a beautiful, airy space that already helps you orient yourself before class. The teachers are thoughtful, intentional and knowledgeable about yoga from a physical and spiritual lens - I never feel any pressure to keep up appearances in this studio and I’ve never felt more comfortable to take any variation. I am building so much more strength and mobility because the teachers here encourage you to feel your body and find the intent and activation in each pose rather than just making the text-book shape without truly connecting to your body. I can’t reccomend this studio more - it’s a strength, connection and awareness practice for the body and mind 🙏

Finally decided to return to yoga after too many years break, and this studio offers an amazing 30 day unlimited introductory package to new students. The class choices are fantastic and the studio feels like home -- very warm vibe! Highly recommend for anyone new to yoga or returning after a break. I have not tried the advanced classes yet, but I'm sure they are amazing, too!

I have been a student at the North Loop since mid 2024 & I think the studio is so welcoming & lovely. I adore the manager & instructors who are very supportive & thoughtful. The community is diverse & it feels like a space for everyone which is wonderful. The rooms are spotless & spacious & there is a variety of classes for all levels of practice. The lobby is a fantastic place to have tea, read a book from the shelf & make friends. The atmosphere is inviting & unpretentious. I am so glad I found it.
